Mission statement
Heart to Soul in Action (HSA) is a non-profit organization whose mission is to promote healthcare and education for the youth in underserved communities in Boston, Houston, Philadelphia, and Richmond. As social entrepreneurs at HSA, our goal is to implement a sustainable, long lasting impact on our targeted communities. In order to ensure continuity, we use an abridged version of the "microfinance loan strategy" by loaning our services to the community in the form of a product (school supplies, books, backpacks, eyeglasses) or a service (educational lessons, eye-care, health-screenings). This solution creates a sustainable system where we encourage the youth to pay it forward in the form of volunteer hours or by making an impact on their community rather than paying us back in money. This creates a culture of service, builds a stronger community, and gives future generations a better environment. The most powerful tool in creating something revolutionary is to make an impact on the youth in order to teach them the value of giving back to society.
History
While the organization officially reached 501-c3 designation in June 2013, our roots stem back to 2009. HSA is built on the notion that education is one of the most important necessities in the 21st century: higher education rates have been correlated with lower pregnancy rates, better social mobility, higher health standards, and more effective communication. To date, we have worked in multiple communities and on many different projects, such as teaching STEM concepts in an engaging, enjoyable manner. We have also donated thousands of supplies to 40 different schools, including the largest independent school district in America: The Houston Independent School District. Additionally, we have coined the North American National social media campaign #nochildbrides, which encompassed thousands of students from all across the North American region. We are also expanding our previous projects and strengthening our former partnerships, while forging into new territory. Currently, our largest project is #GiveinSight, where we host healthcare screenings to promote eye care and make corrective lenses more accessible.
